1977 - 1988

I worked as a waiter or busperson for over ten years, from high school to the beginning of my career at Woodland. Restaurant work supported me through college, and it allowed me the freedom to sample a number of different occupations while I tried to find my place in the world.

Along the way I worked with some great people in interesting establishments, the most notable of which were a pair of Venice Beach eateries owned by Bruce Marder and his wife Rebecca — the West Beach Cafe and Rebecca's — and the (just recently opened at the time I joined) San Francisco bistro, Stars.
