Ann & Hilary's Wedding Invitations

1995

Our wedding was a hand-crafted affair. We designed the invitations, stitched and bound our guestbook from scratch, brewed a special batch of beer, and so on.

The invitation was especially fun, and continues to generate positive feedback even today. People are still telling us that they have it displayed on their refrigerator or bookshelf.

The invitation was a long, thin page that was accordian-folded into four sections. As you unfolded it and worked your way around it you got the story of how we met, re-met, and decided to marry. To keep costs down it was printed in one color, with custom rubber stamps applied by a team of dedicated friends to add a few spots of color.

The envelopes were a large single sheet with a map of Madison (which I made with Adobe Illustrator) printed on the inside. The envelope was then folded in a complicated pattern that I cribbed from some funky stationary we'd found in a catalog.

When it was all folded up it had a single little tab that folded over from back to front at the upper right corner. To hold it together we simply applied the stamp on top of the tab. I had to pre-score every single fold by hand with a ruler and a bone, which was a real chore.

The map was also decorated with custom rubber stamps that showed the locations of the church, reception hall, and hotels.

We made a special batch of homebrewed beer for the reception. I didn't think it was as good as our first batch of homebrew (Mus Mortuus Stout), but I don't recall having much left over so it must have been drinkable.
