This is the cover for a wedding invitation that I did for some very good friends of mine. It's by far the most complex scene that I've attempted. I almost wasn't able to render it. My computer would just die as it neared the end (after about 30 hours). Doug Truex and his trusty Hash render farm finally did the trick, though he also had to make several attempts before he was able to make it all the way through.

  • The vase is a modified version of the water glass in my Red-i-Racer still life.

  • The lampshade uses color and ambient maps to simulate translucency. The hammered copper body is a procedural texture (material).

  • The flower petals use several texture maps, with matching bump maps for each one.

  • The wood texture for the table and picture frame came from a scan I made of a wooden block that holds our kitchen knives. I used the texture to make color, bump and specular maps.

  • The newspaper text was done in Illustrator and then rasterized in Photoshop. The coffee stains on the newspaper were scanned from some stains and rings I made on a scrap of paper.

  • There are several non-shadow-casting fill lights to simulate radiosity.

  • The little lizard made out of glass beads was a killer! Each bead is a separate object, and the cords actually run through the middle of each one. Assembling and posing it was a really tedious chore, but the end result was worth it.

I've collected some of the textures and maps that I built for this project on a separate page.

Below are some of the other parts of the invitation package. The inside spread and the backgrounds of the two cards were rendered in Hash A:M.
