Facial Model

Hash Animation:Master, 1999

This is my first attempt at building a face using Hash Animation:Master. Actually, it's the first time I've tried building a face in any 3d software.

The rotoscopes I used for modeling the front and side views were borrowed from a tutorial page that featured the excellent facial mesh created by Armando Afre. I departed from his design partly because the lo-res images of his mesh that I was working from weren't clear enough for me to make out what exactly was happening to his splines in the region of the nose. I also had an idea that his mesh might not be the best solution for creating faces that are lumpier and more wrinked than his lovely "Sylvie" character.

After studying my results, however, I suspect that I might be better off going back to his design. My mesh has at least nine 5-point patches on each side of the face, and it may not animate as smoothly as Mr. Afre's.

Another problem that became apparent when I copied, flipped and attached the half mesh is that the seam down the middle is too peaked - I need to broaden the areas down the center of the model to smooth out the transition from right to left side. There is also a pronounced crease at the corner of the mouth that angles up where most human mouths would have a fold that angles down. That's a side-effect of two 5-point patches right at the corner, and another incentive to try to follow Mr. Afre's mesh more closely.
